Employment for Individuals with Developmental Disabilities

Free for all to attend at 7:30 pm on Wednesday, November 16, 2016, join Elizabeth Turner and Chris Arnold for an evening session on employment for individuals with developmental disabilities.

Elizabeth Turner will begin the evening with opening remarks, followed with a session on Job Finding by Chris Arnold. He will touch on some practical ideas for success, as well as strategies to avoid common challenges in jobs. Chris aims to “empower people towards excellence” and his passion and knowledge of this topic will have participants leaving with new ideas and energy for job development and retention for people with barriers to employment.

Chris Arnold will cover the following key areas:

Successes: The 5 Key Factors for success: who you know, what you know, don’t wait in line, having a level
playing field, and seeing opportunity everywhere.

Challenges: common job finding challenges to overcome such as: assumptions & limitations, not digging deep enough, systems limits and getting stuck in the box.

Retention: tips for helping to maintain employment and retention rates, looking at common issues that may arise and tips for dealing with them.

Opening Remarks: The Heroes’ Journey and Navigating Life and Work with our Inner GPS

Elizabeth Turner

 

Ms. Turner has an MA in Counselling Psychology (Vocational Rehabilitation) from UBC and 20+ years in the vocational counselling field. She is the owner of Full Flight Life Coaching in Surrey, BC and is a certified Martha Beck life coach. She offers personal and professional coaching and workshops on a variety of topics including goalsetting, navigating change and managing overwhelm. She also co-facilitates nature and equus (horse) coaching retreats out of the Apache Springs Ranch in Arizona. Ms. Turner is the mother of a special needs child (her son Oliver has fragile X and autism) and in her work also coaches parents of uniquely abled children. She has recently conducted workshops for organizations such as FIT (Families in Touch the Fraser Valley), the Fraser Valley Down Syndrome Society and the Ministry of Children and Family Development. When not speaking and coaching Ms. Turner writes and her work has been found in publications such as the Globe and Mail, the Whistler Question and Bon Vivant.

Chris Arnold

Chris is the director / co-owner of a successful consulting, community based training and specialized employment agency located in northwestern BC (Terrace & Kitimat). Chris has been working with people with disabilities for over 28 years, in residential and community based programs. Currently, Chris teaches psychology at Northwest Community College and has taught in the Disability & Community Studies Dept. for Douglas College.
